From an upstart to one of the most popular Android flagships: The journey of Samsung Galaxy S series – Times of India

The count down has started for the launch of Samsung’s first big flagship of the year 2021 — Galaxy S21. The company has sent invites for Galaxy Unpacked 2021 event, scheduled for January 14. Samsung has dubbed the virtual as ‘Everyday Epic’. Over the years, Galaxy S series has emerged as one of the most-popular Android flagships. The series is known to introduce innovations to Android phones both in terms of design and functionality. Ahead of the launch of the newest additions to the Galaxy S family, here’s a look back at the Samsung Galaxy S lineup over the years.
Samsung Galaxy S (2010): Galaxy S was launched in 2010 with what is said to be the first 4-inch (10 cm) 480×800 pixel Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display, a PowerVR graphics processor, Wi-Fi connectivity, a 5-megapixel primary camera and a 0.3-megapixel secondary front-facing camera.
Samsung Galaxy S2 (2011): With thickness of just 8.49mm, Galaxy S2 is claimed to have introduced as the size zero of smartphones. It was one of the first devices to offer a Mobile High-definition Link which allows up to 1080p uncompressed video output to an MHL enabled TV or to an MHL to HDMI adapter, while charging the device at the same time.
Samsung Galaxy S3 (2012): Galaxy S3 is claimed to be the first smartphone with an HD screen. With this smartphone, Samsung launched Multi Window (Android 4.1), Ambient Light, Smart Stay, S Voice, and S Beam (NFC). It employed an intelligent personal assistant (S Voice) and eye-tracking ability.
Samsung Galaxy S4 (2013): Galaxy S4 focused on features like IR Blaster (phone could double as a universal remote), Smart Program, Smart Rotation, Smart Scroll, and Story Album. The phone also featured ability to detect a finger hovering over the screen. It also had an expanded eye tracking functionality.
Samsung Galaxy S5 (2014): The fifth generation Galaxy S model brought fingerprint scanner on the home button and a heart rate sensor near the primary camera. Galaxy S5 was IP67 Dust and Water Resistant.
Samsung launched Galaxy S6 & S6 edge (2015): Samsung launched Galaxy S6 & S6 edge with wireless charging and curved edge screen features. Wireless charging gave consumers more flexibility to charge their phones, Curved Edge Screen Display introduced a new way for users to interact with their devices with edge functionality.
Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge (2016): Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are said to be the first phones to offer a Dual Pixel Autofocus camera that is said to offer good image quality regardless of lighting conditions.
Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ (2017): With Galaxy S8 and S8+, Samsung introduced Infinity Display. It also introduced Samsung Pay for India.
Samsung Galaxy S9 & Galaxy S9+ (2018): Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ introduced features such as Dolby Atmos Surround Sound, Dual Aperture, and AR Emoji etc.
Samsung Galaxy S10 (2019): The Ultra Wide Lens debuted on Galaxy S10. Both front and rear cameras could shoot in up to UHD quality, which is claimed to be an industry first then.
Samsung Galaxy S20 (2020): Samsung Galaxy S20 series is the company’s first full 5G flagship lineup, featuring AI camera technologies.
