Even as the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) was contemplating conducting the Class 12 boards from March before the assembly elections, Sarma put an end to all speculations through his tweet. “High School Leaving Certificate examination from 11th May. Higher Secondary examination from 12th May. Result of HSLC & HS examinations will be declared within 7th and 30th July respectively,” Himanta tweeted on Saturday.
Later, he told the media that the examinees will get ample time to get ready for appearing in the board exams as the AHSEC and Board of Secondary Education, Assam (Seba) has already curtailed course contents by 30% in view of the academic losses incurred due to closure of educational institutions for months after Covid-19 breakout.
“We request the students to study seriously. Though 30% of the course volume has already been reduced by the state education boards, especially the science students need to study the entire course thoroughly. We won’t be able to reduce the course contents of medical and engineering tests,” said Himanta.
Both AHSEC and Seba have been waiting for the state government’s opinion on their internal plannings to conduct the board exams amid the pandemic situation.
Sources in AHSEC told TOI that this week, while the board was planning to finalize the Class 12 boards exam schedule tentatively from March, Dispur intervened and asked it to wait before finalizing the exam dates. For many of the AHSEC officials, the announcement by the minister came as a surprise, the source added. “Whatever announcement has been made by the education minister will be followed. The exam dates are being discussed and are expected to be published by next Tuesday,” said AHSEC secretary Ramesh Chandra Chutia.
Seba officials, however, said they were expecting the Class 10 boards from May itself on the lines of CBSE. “Going together with the CBSE dates will be helpful for Assam state board examinees. They will be able to appear in all-India level exams along with the CBSE students without collision of dates. The detailed exam schedule is likely to be published within the next four days,” said Seba controller of examinations Nayan Jyoti Sarmah.
