NEW DELHI: Come January 1, 2021, all voice calls from Reliance Jio to other networks in India will be free as interconnect usage charge (IUC) regime ends on Thursday (December 31, 2020).
“As soon as IUC charges are abolished, Jio will once again make all off-net domestic voice calls free, starting January 1, 2021. On-net domestic voice calls have always been free on the Jio network,” the company said in a statement.
Over the last one year or so, Jio was charging customers 6 paise per minute for voice calls made to rival phone networks, but compensated subscribers by giving free data of equal value.
In September last year, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had decided to discontinue the charges by 2021.
As per the Trai order, there will be no IUC charges from January 1, 2021, which conveys that the telecom operators can’t charge their customers for making domestic calls on other networks.
With a total subscriber base of 406 million, Mukesh Ambani-led Jio aims to launch 5G services in the second half of 2021.
