Internet Archive is saving old games as Adobe set to kill Flash by 2020-end – Times of India

With Adobe Flash to meet its end of life by the end of 2020, popular games and animations based on Flash will stop working. Thankfully, the Internet Archive has announced that it is emulating Flash animations, games and toys in their software collection. This means you can continue to play them and recall your good old childhood memories. To play Flash games, you will not need to have a flash plugin installed. Any browser that supports Webassembly will allow you to play these games.
“Utilizing an in-development Flash emulator called Ruffle, we have added Flash support to the Internet Archive’s Emularity system, letting a subset of Flash items play in the browser as if you had a Flash plugin installed. While Ruffle’s compatibility with Flash is less than 100%, it will play a very large portion of historical Flash animation in the browser, at both a smooth and accurate rate,” the non-profit digital library wrote in its blog post. For those unaware, the Internet Archive also hosts Wayback Machine.
Back in November 2011, Adobe had announced that it was ending support of Flash for mobile web browsers, and in 2017, announced it was discontinuing Flash altogether for 2020. The Internet Archive has been preparing to save Flash games and animations for quite some time now.
Meanwhile, you won’t be able to play popular games like FarmVille on Facebook any longer for the same reason. Also, FarmVille creator Zynga is shutting down the original web-based game by the end of this year. Facebook is helping developers to migrate out of Flash and continue providing their games. “To make sure developers experience continued product support and a platform that complies with the highest security standards, we will end new game submissions for Web Games on Facebook by December 31, 2020 and Gameroom will be closed entirely on June 30, 2021. Both Gameroom and Web Games on Facebook host many Flash games that will be removed due to Flash end of life,” Facebook said in a statement earlier.
