Amazon dumps Ring, moves Google Glass Rival Echo Frames out of beta – Times of India

Amazon’s smart glasses — Echo Frames — have just got an upgrade, while it discontinues its smart ring — Echo Loop Ring. The company launched the two Alexa-powered products at its hardware event last year. Both the devices are part of Amazon’s new program called Day 1 Editions designed to introduce products for testing and seek customer feedback. These products were so far available on invite-only basis.
Amazon Echo Frames is a Google Glass rival. The Alexa-enabled glasses that sport microphones and speaker have also recieved new feature updates. Priced at $250, the second-generation smart glasses will be available through Amazon starting December 10. It’s so far not clear if Amazon will launch these glasses in India as well.
“Nestled in the temples, open-ear audio directs sound toward your ears, so you can ask Alexa to make a phone call, listen to music, control your smart home, hear notifications, and more—all while keeping your ears uncovered. It’s the best of both worlds—personal audio with the magic of Alexa when you want it, while still being able to tune in to the world around you,” the company said while describing the glasses. Echo Frames, as per the company, give users prescription-ready eyewear with open-ear audio and hands-free access to Alexa.
The all-new Echo Frames boasts of improved audio quality, longer battery life and come in new color options. “The volume can now be set to automatically adjust at the start of playback based on the noise level of your environment and your selected listening profile—increasing the volume in noisier environments and lowering the volume in quieter environments,” as per the company.
Echo Loop to be discontinued
Amazon also announced that Echo Loop will not advance beyond the Day 1 Editions program. The company is ending both its production as well as sales. “We learned a lot about how customers want to use Alexa for short, snackable content throughout the day, and we will take that with us as we continue to invent new customer experiences,” said Amazon in a satement.
However, customers who purchased Echo Loop will continue to receive updates and support, and can continue to use their devices as they have been doing so far.
