Twitter clone Parler becomes most-downloaded app in a single day in the US: Features and more – Times of India

Social media app Parler recently became one of the most-downloaded apps in the US, thanks to Twitter flagging some of Donald Trump’s recent tweets as ‘misleading’. As per a report by SensorTower, the app saw 980,000 downloads during the US election week. The almost two-year-old app is now among the most-downloaded apps on both Apple App Store and Google Play Store in the US.
As for the ban, Twitter also reportedly banned several other Right Wing-linked accounts for allegedly spreading misinformation and violating its rules. Even Facebook took down pages of some right wing leaders for what it claimed spreading fake news.
Parler was introduced by John Matze and Jared Thomson along with support from Republican Rebekah Mercer in 2018. The app made its mark as an alternative to Twitter allowing “free speech.” The sudden increase in user base was witnessed soon after President Donald Trump lost to Joe Biden in the US presidential race.

What is Parler and how to open an account
Parler is very similar to Twitter. You can post up to 1000 characters, comment on other’s posts and also “echo” them. Echo is similar to retweet but has a megaphone icon. You can upvote a post, share them and also use hashtags. The platform is very similar to Twitter and you would need to have your own ID.
To open an account on Parler, you would need to download Parler from the app and sign in with your email address, mobile number and password. A mobile number is essential for creating your account as you would need to verify with an OTP.

How is Parler different from Twitter
Parler makes it mandatory to sign-in with your mobile number. The company claims that this makes it difficult for bots to operate. Also, there’s more character limit than Twitter. Your post can be up to 1000 characters long while on Twitter there is a limit of just 280 characters. But what’s most important is that Parler has fewer rules than Twitter. There are no fact-checkers or the Parker will not label any post as misinformation.
Parler also offers coloured badges to identify public figures and general users. It also makes it easy to identify bots and doesn’t allow users to spam along with “repetitive comments and posts which are irrelevant to the conversation.” But the major USP is Parler will allow people to post any content in the name of freedom of speech without the fear of being banned or labelled as misinformation.
