Dr Jayakumar given charge of Sree Chitra director – Times of India

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Dr K Jayakumar has been given the charge of the director of Sree Chitra Thirunal Institute of Medical Sciences as the Central Administrative Tribunal has quashed the extension given to Dr Asha Kishore for five more years.

The president of the institute has appointed Dr Jayakumar, the senior most professor of the institute, as the director-in-charge of the institute till further orders or till the post is filled through the normal selection process. Dr Jayakumar assumed charge on Monday.

Dr Jayakumar who started his tenure in Sree Chitra from 2001, had served as the head of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery department and is also the Sree Chitra Governing body member.

Former director moves HC

However, the infighting over the director post of the institute has reached the High Court once again. Dr Asha Kishore has now approached the High Court against the CAT order.

Earlier the high court in August had set aside CAT interim order staying the extension of service granted to Dr Asha Kishore as director.

A division bench of the High Court had issued the order after considering a petition by Dr Asha. The court had asked CAT to consider the case before it again on September 23 after hearing the parties before it.

It was in July that the term of Dr Asha was extended for five years, while her service was scheduled to end on July 15. A stay was issued by the CAT on August 5 on the petition alleging that service was extended without the permission of the central government.

The extension was given by the president of the institute. However, the department of science and technology later had quashed the decision of the president of the institute.

But at the high court, Asha contended that her original appointment did not require the permission of central government’s Appointment Committee of Cabinet and therefore her extension also does not require its approval.

But the CAT in its order on November 6 said as per the act the Central government or the department of science and technology has powers to issue necessary directions to the institute and the president of the governing body is bound to follow the directions issued by the Centre.
