Arjun Kapoor: “COVID fatigue is real, don’t know how badly my lungs were affected” – Times of India

COVID-19 affects everyone in a different manner- from the symptoms to the recovery process.

Actor Arjun Kapoor has become the latest one to highlight how different and dreaded COVID-19 can be on the body. Even the young and healthy at heart can find themselves feeling down and out battling the infection.

The 35-year-old actor, who tested positive for COVID-19 along with his girlfriend Malaika Arora back in September has fully recovered but he calls his battle with the virus a dreary experience which has left him super drained and fatigued.

While Arjun was initially asymptomatic, but soon enough suffered from mild symptoms including cough, fever, body pain and exhaustion.

In an interview with Mid-Day, the actor recounted his recovery period, comparing his symptoms to a viral fever which would soon get worse:

“I was diagnosed positive on a Sunday. I remember waking up the next day with a slight fever, body ache, and was feeling fatigued while using the washroom. By Wednesday, it felt like a regular viral and the fever had subsided, but I felt sluggish and tired through the rest of the week.

While the actor feels grateful for the medical support and care, he still feels some lingering side-effects from the infection. His girlfriend Malaika, too, recently spoke up about undergoing some symptoms of COVID, including hair loss and exhaustion.

“I was diagnosed positive on a Sunday. I remember waking up the next day with a slight fever, body ache, and was feeling fatigued while using the washroom. By Wednesday, it felt like a regular viral and the fever had subsided, but I felt sluggish and tired through the rest of the week.

Why does COVID fatigue and exhaustion hit people so badly?

Arjun isn’t the only COVID survivor to experience signs of fatigue and exhaustion which can seem to be neverending. Studies say that nearly 60% of patients suffer from long-lasting fatigue and tiredness, weeks and sometimes, months after making a recovery, making it a much-feared consequence.

Many patients also complain of feeling super stressed and tired and feeling a degraded difference in their quality of life. Exhaustion is a sign which can be commonly experienced with viral infections. However, the degree to which COVID-19 causes fatigue has never been witnessed before. While scientists continue to study the behaviour patterns and repercussions of the virus, one of the most likely reasons for fatigue and tiredness is the improper immune response and inflammatory attack (dubbed the infamous cytokine storm in COVID terminology) has been considered to be one of the causes of energy loss and imbalance. Battling the SARS-COV-2 virus can also make a person experience muscle aches, pain, lethargy and dullness, which can make it rather difficult for a person to immediately resume life in a normal manner. Hence, patients are advised to follow precautions and take it a day at a time.

Arjun also added that while his age and health aided his fast recovery, people of an older age can take longer to recover.

“I am young, but the senior family members might not be able to cope with this as easily we can.”

A while back, Arjun had also talked about the time he got his test results back, and how he couldn’t believe that COVID-19 had gotten to him.

“I had just shot for a few days and did the test to restart the second schedule so I felt disappointed that because of me the shoot will get cancelled. I then realised that I’ve to now be careful with my family, so there was a bit of concern, anger, irritation, but I also knew I’ve to deal with it practically. This one Sunday (September 6) just blew out of proportion for me. It took me six-eight hours to accept the situation before I could speak with the doctor. I calmed down when the doctor told me I was mostly asymptomatic. I felt mild symptoms coming in over the course so I guess it panned out alright.”
