A new banking malware is targeting Android phones, here’s what you should not do – Times of India

Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has found a new banking malware that can spy and steal data from153 Android apps. Dubbed as Ghimob, this malware can be found hidden inside malicious apps and it is spreading through third party app downloads. This means it is important to only download Android apps from Google Play store. Do not click on random click or visit websites to download apps.
The Ghimob malware is using names like Google Docs, WhatsApp Updater, Google Defender and mimicking original apps to infect phones. Apart from malicious apps, this malware is also spreading via email.
Once this malware has been installed on a victim’s device after getting all necessary permissions, the malware automatically searches for the apps that are already present on the phone. It then creates fake login pages of the apps that are already used by the owner of the phone to steal login credentials. It has the capability to mimic login pages of 153 popular Android apps which includes several banking apps.
“Ghimob is a full-fledged spy in your pocket: once infection is completed, the hacker can access the infected device remotely, completing the fraudulent transaction with the victim’s smartphone, so as to avoid machine identification, security measures implemented by financial institutions and all their antifraud behavioral systems. Even if the user has a screen lock pattern in place, Ghimob is able to record it and later replay it to unlock the device,” warned Kaspersky in an official blog post.
This malware has targeting Android users in Brazil the most followed by India, China, US and some parts of Europe and UK. Ghimob also blocks the user from uninstalling it, restarting or shutting down the device.
